The New DAN Emergency Hotline
By
Christine McTaggart
One number activates all emergency services.
In an emergency, divers have long depended on the simple notion of
"calling DAN® for help." Now DAN has made that task even easier with
the debut of a new, consolidated emergency hotline number: +1-919-684-9111.
Dubbed "One Call," the new number allows members to access DAN
medics, TravelAssist® services and local medical facilities 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week and from anywhere in the world. One Call
operators will triage incoming calls and link divers to the
appropriate emergency assistance. The new number can be reached by
collect call or from outside the United States.
"We had a goal this year to streamline our emergency assistance
resources," said Dan Orr, president of DAN. "One Call is a huge step
toward that goal."
"Over the last few years, as the benefits and resources we provided
the dive industry increased, so did the phone numbers to access the
assistance," said Nicholas Bird, M.D., DAN's chief medical officer.
"Divers were getting understandably confused. By simplifying the
process to a single phone number, we've given divers needing
assistance one less thing to think about in a stressful situation."
The new number went "live" in late 2009, and while DAN's previous
hotline numbers will remain in effect for a transitional grace
period, divers are encouraged to update their emergency contact
information and emergency assistance plans as soon as possible.
As always, in the case of an immediate life-threatening emergency,
contact 911 (or the equivalent local emergency response system), and
then call DAN.
